Mad About Cartoons

Bill Wray is trying to make the transition fine art but is known as a cartoonist, a background painter/ Art director and sometimes animation director. This will be the place he post his ocasional animation and cartooning work and also be a place to bitch or wax sentimentally about cartoons in general. It’s been a love and hate relationship for many years and the long journey may not be quite over.

Friends

Here is one by the great Scott Wills. I twisted his arm to do this one just becasue I wanted to see how great it would be...from a Bob Camp layout. Gator is too.
I'll be doing a Sam Jack post soon. He willl be featured.

unused title card. Bob wanted it painted normal.

Hey William, Just lucked on your blog, and your work was what my childhood dream was. But I think I know where you're coming from now, everyone always asked me when I was going to do real art? I've finally learnt....paint from the heart.
cheers.
Love your work !!

Awesome bgs, Bill! I hope you'll keep posting these. That sponge technique in the trees is beautiful, and the linework is so solid. May I ask, what size do these generally get painted?

pumml: you can see the acme pegholes at the bottom. that should be a good indication for you if you've ever seen animation paper.

you're the greatest, bill! just a real knockout. i'm inspired to pick up painting again this summer.

Blogger Drake Brodahl (pumml) said...

Thanks, Katzenjammer. I'm a graphic designer by trade and have never seen animation paper in person. I'm guessing it's the 12 field size though? Approximately 14 x 10.5"?

Hey I like that unused title card. Do you do color studies first before you do the final? Or do you just start rocking out?

Mr. Wray, you are one of the greatest artists of the last year.
Im a argentine cartoonist, sorry, please, my Tarzan english.
I love all the close ups for Ren & Stimpy, and the Big Blown Bay comics, but here i see some new close ups amazing, better than everyting I see in the past.
I se your "serious" painting, are great, you have no limits. Like many cartoonist from Argentina, I admire very much.

For your background work, what's the usual schedule you're under?

It seems like you have to retain a lot of resources in order to produce so much color for one 11-minute cartoon.

I just peed my pants a little, at the gorgeous rat bg and the news of the upcoming Sam Jack bgs! This is shaping up to be one hell of a post. Thanks, Bill!

Btw, I tried to contact Scott about designing a website, please let him know the offer still stands!

thanks everyone! Your comments are uplifting. I'm sorry I have to do less personal answering of each comment, but I read them and am filed with joy and spurred on to post more art despite no time. I'm working hard on The Mighty Bee for Nick and my one man show in September. Everyone is trying so very hard on MB, it should be a great show.
